Climate-Control vs. Non-Climate

"Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it." ~ Albert Einstein

Have you ever drove by a storage facility and seen “climate control”? Well, over the years the popularity of storing luxury items has been in high demand, especially when the facility has 24/7 secured access along with climate-controlled units. Seguin Storage has taken on the challenge and created a facility for the city of Seguin and the surrounding areas which will incorporate all the features that are wanted and needed by customers. Throughout this blog we will describe all the ins and outs of climate-controlled units and help you figure out if it is the right type of storage for you!

Climate vs. Ambient

First, you need to be able to identify the difference between ambient (non-climate-control) and climate-controlled air. Although Seguin Storage provides both types of units, being able to identify the two helps with your decision. As obvious as it sounds the most important difference is the temperature. Climate-controlled units are often kept at no lower than 65 degrees in the winter and 80 degrees (F) in the summer. This keeps the storage units from reaching extreme high and low temperatures, which depending on your items stored can be damaging. Climate-controlled units are also humidity regulated, meaning they are not humid as ambient units. As for non-climate also referred to as ambient air will follow the current outdoor temperature. Seguin Storage has ceiling insulation throughout ALL their buildings, so the temperatures in their Ambient (non-climate-controlled) units will be less affected by the outdoor temperatures, especially in the summer when the units are exposed to the sun. Another important difference between climate-controlled units and normal storage units is how they are accessed. Climate-controlled units are usually located inside a larger building, which are referred to as interior storage units. As for ambient air units, they are typically on the exterior of the buildings. Ambient units’ function and appear like a garage where you can directly drive up to the unit and unload. Prices between units vary from facility to facility. Generally climate-controlled units are going to be 10-20% higher in price over ambient units. Still can’t decide? Here are a few questions to help guide your decision:
  1. What is going to be stored? While some just want to store their belongings in a cool/warm environment, there are times where specific items need protection from the heat and cold weather. Those items might include: leather, wood, artwork, antiques, photographs, important documents and electronics.
  2. How valuable are these items? Next, you need to decide how valuable these items are to you. Since climate-controlled units run a bit more, you need to decide on if you want to protect your valuables and spend a little more on a better protected unit.
  3. How long will these items be in storage? If it is only a week or two a climate-controlled unit may not be necessary. But if you plan on keeping these items in a unit for months then you want to make sure they are protected throughout the different seasons.
  4. What is the climate like in your area? Finally, if the location you are storing at has extreme highs in the summer (totally Texas) and lows in the summer (you never know with Texas weather lol) a climate-controlled unit would more than likely be your best bet.
No matter what type of unit you decide to go with, Seguin Storage is here to make storing simple. With a variety of different style units, helpful staff, state of the art security, and free use of a truck. Seguin Storage is a facility you can count on!
